Anti-aging night cream: how to choose it and use it well

In short: a good anti-aging night cream combines hydration (hyaluronic acid, glycerin), repair (ceramides, squalane) and targeted actives (peptides, retinol where appropriate). Apply it as the last step, after your serums, a hazelnut-sized amount for the face and neck.

At night, the skin regenerates and loses more water. An anti-aging night cream supports this work. This guide sums up the essentials of market comparisons, including the reference brands, and helps you choose according to your age, your skin and your budget.

Why a night cream?

The skin loses more water at night (transepidermal water loss) and its repair mechanisms are active. A night cream provides hydration, lipids and repairing actives, with a richer texture than a day cream and no sunscreen.

At what age to start?

  • Around 25: hydration and prevention.
  • Around 30: first fine lines, add peptides or retinol.
  • Around 40: richer textures, ceramides, firmness support.
  • Around 50 and over: very nourishing care, attention to dry areas.

Actives to look for

  • Hyaluronic acid: holds water, plumps.
  • Peptides: support a firm look.
  • Squalane: softens without greasiness.
  • Ceramides: help protect the skin barrier.
  • Retinol: smoothing, to introduce gradually (retinol guide).

Comparison: the brands most often mentioned

The 2026 comparisons regularly mention these pharmacy and perfumery anti-aging night creams:

  • La Roche-Posay: Redermic R Nuit (retinol).
  • Vichy: LiftActiv Nuit.
  • Clarins: Multi-Régénérante Nuit.
  • Caudalie: Resvératrol-Lift Nuit.
  • Nuxe: Nuxuriance Ultra Nuit.
  • Avène: DermAbsolu Nuit.
  • Kiehl’s: Midnight Recovery Concentrate (night oil).

They differ in their positioning (pharmacy, perfumery, luxury) and their signature active. Our anti-aging repairing night cream combines hyaluronic acid 2%, peptides 1%, squalane 1% and ceramide 0.5% in 50 ml, vegan, at an accessible price point.

Which texture for your skin?

  • Dry skin: a generous layer, with a moisturizing serum underneath.
  • Combination skin: a thin layer, focused on the cheeks.
  • Oily skin: a very thin layer, fluid texture.
  • Sensitive skin: patch test on the inside of the elbow first.

How to apply it

  1. Cleanse and dry your face.
  2. Apply your serums: hyaluronic acid, peptides, or retinol.
  3. Finish with the night cream, massaging from the center outwards, without forgetting the neck.

A hazelnut-sized amount is enough.

Night cream and retinol

Night cream is retinol’s best ally: apply the retinol first, let it absorb, then the cream. See retinol for beginners.

Air conditioning, heating and night

The dry air of air conditioning and heating speeds up the skin’s water loss. A night cream and a hyaluronic acid serum help preserve comfort on waking.

Day or night cream: what is the difference?

Day cream protects and moisturizes against external aggressors, often with SPF. Night cream focuses on comfort and repairing actives. A richer texture makes it pleasant at the end of the day.

Common mistakes

  • Applying too much product.
  • Going to bed without removing makeup.
  • Changing cream every week: allow four to six weeks.
  • Forgetting the neck and décolleté.

What happens in the skin at night

The skin follows a 24-hour rhythm. A review published in 2022 in Cureus notes that water loss through the skin increases in the evening and at night, when the barrier lets more water evaporate. This is when a cream rich in hydrating agents and lipids is most useful. It is also why light-sensitive actives, such as retinol, are used in the evening.

Night cream for dark spots or brightening?

An anti-aging night cream mainly targets comfort, hydration and the look of fine lines. For dark spots, there are two options:

  • Keep the repairing night cream and add a targeted serum underneath, such as retinol every other evening.
  • Use a cream dedicated to dark spots, such as the Crème Anti-Taches & Éclat, morning and evening, and keep the night cream for retinol evenings.

In both cases, the morning SPF 50 decides the result. See our guide dark spots: morning and evening routine.

Retinol night cream or retinol serum?

Some night creams already contain retinol. It is practical, but hydration and the active can no longer be dosed separately. A retinol serum under a night cream without retinol makes it possible to space out retinol in the first weeks while keeping the cream every evening. It is the most flexible method for a beginner.

Night cream and the eye area

Most face night creams can come close to the orbital bone, but not to the mobile eyelid or the lash line. If your eyes are puffy when you wake up, apply less cream to this area: a rich texture can retain water. A dedicated eye care product remains the most suitable.

Night cream at 50 and during menopause

With falling oestrogen levels, the skin often becomes drier, thinner and loses firmness. Needs change: richer textures, ceramides and squalane for the barrier, hyaluronic acid for hydration, peptides for a firmer look. A night cream does not replace medical follow-up, but it greatly improves comfort on waking.

Night cream and the Moroccan climate

In summer, heat and air conditioning make the skin sweat during the day and dry out at night. Many women then switch to a thinner layer or a gel-cream, and keep the rich texture for winter, especially in Fès, Ifrane or the Oriental region, where nights are cold and dry. On oily skin, a night cream that is too rich can clog pores: a well-spread hazelnut-sized amount is better than two thick layers.

Reading a night cream label

  • The first ingredients: water, glycerin, oils or squalane form the base. Actives (peptides, ceramides) come further down, which is normal.
  • The stated percentages: our night cream shows hyaluronic acid 2%, peptides 1%, squalane 1% and ceramide 0.5%.
  • Fragrance: best limited if the skin is reactive.
  • Period after opening: the small open jar on the packaging shows for how many months to use it.

A complete evening routine

  1. Make-up removal and gentle cleanser.
  2. Every other evening: Sérum Rétinol Régénérant. The other evenings: Sérum Peptides & Phyto-Collagène Anti-Âge.
  3. Crème Nuit Réparatrice Anti-Âge, face and neck.

Frequently asked questions

Is a night cream essential?

It is not mandatory, but it helps maintain comfort and support hydration during sleep.

At what age should you use an anti-aging night cream?

There is no fixed age. Many start around 30, but a moisturizing night cream is useful before then.

Can the same cream be used day and night?

It is possible, but a night cream often has a richer texture and repairing actives.

How much should be applied?

A hazelnut-sized amount for the face and neck.

Can a night cream be used with retinol?

Yes: retinol first, then the cream.

Is there a night cream for dark spots?

Yes, but an anti-aging night cream mainly targets hydration and fine lines. For dark spots, add a targeted serum or a dark spot cream, and SPF 50 every morning.

Why does the skin need more hydration at night?

Because water loss through the skin increases in the evening and at night. A rich cream limits this evaporation.

Is a retinol night cream necessary?

It is not essential. A retinol serum under a night cream without retinol makes it easier to dose the active, especially at the beginning.
