Retinol for beginners: how to start without irritating your skin

In short: start with a low-strength retinol (0.2 to 0.3%), one evening in three for two weeks, on clean, dry skin, followed by a cream. Apply a pea-sized amount. In the morning, SPF 50 is a must. Not during pregnancy.

Retinol (ريتينول) is the most recommended anti-aging active. It is also the one that worries people most: redness, peeling skin, tingling. The good news: with the right method, most skin types get used to it. Here is a guide that brings together what the leading references say (Paula’s Choice, The Ordinary, Medik8, Lesielle), adapted for Morocco.

Retinol, retinal, retinoids: what is the difference?

  • Retinoids: the family of all vitamin A derivatives.
  • Retinol esters (retinyl palmitate): the gentlest, the least active.
  • Retinol: the reference cosmetic form, available over the counter.
  • Retinal (retinaldehyde): more active, one conversion step fewer.
  • Tretinoin, adapalene: more powerful retinoids, often prescription-only depending on the country.

The guides by Paula’s Choice and The Ordinary detail each type.

What does retinol do?

Retinol is used to smooth skin texture, soften the look of fine lines and dark spots, and revive radiance. It works over time: allow several weeks before seeing a difference.

What strength for a beginner?

Aim for 0.2 to 0.3%. Our 0.3% retinol serum is combined with squalane and jojoba and grape seed oils. The Ordinary ranges offer 0.2%, 0.5% and 1% retinol in squalane: a good progression scale.

The starting schedule

  1. Weeks 1 and 2: one evening in three.
  2. Weeks 3 and 4: every other evening, if the skin feels comfortable.
  3. From week 5: every evening or according to your tolerance.

Amount: a pea-sized drop for the whole face. More is not better.

The “sandwich” method for reactive skin

Apply a thin layer of moisturizer, then the retinol, then a second layer of cream. The effect is gentler and slower, but well tolerated.

At what age should you start retinol?

There is no fixed age. Many dermatologists mention the mid to late twenties for prevention, and earlier for targeted concerns. Medik8 details a decade-by-decade approach in its guide What age should you start retinol?.

When and how to add it to your routine?

In the evening, after cleansing, on clean, dry skin, before the cream. Do not apply around the eyes without a suitable product. See the order of applying skincare.

What to do (and not do) with other actives?

  • Vitamin C: in the morning, not at the same time as retinol.
  • AHA / BHA: not on the same evening (AHA and BHA guide).
  • Benzoyl peroxide: can deactivate some retinoids and irritate: ask for advice.
  • Niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, ceramides: excellent partners.

SPF: essential

Retinol makes the skin more sensitive to the sun. Every morning, SPF 50, especially in the Moroccan climate. Read sun protection all year round.

How long before seeing results?

  • Month 1: adjustment, possible tightness.
  • Months 2 to 3: smoother skin texture, more even complexion.
  • 3 to 6 months: fine lines look smoother, with regular use.

Irritation, peeling: what to do?

Slight tightness at first is common. If the skin turns red, burns or peels, pause the retinol, use a moisturizing and repairing product (hyaluronic acid serum, night cream) and start again more gently. If the signs persist, see a doctor.

Retinol, pregnancy and sensitive skin

As a precaution, retinol products are not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding: ask your doctor for advice. Very reactive skin, rosacea or eczema: talk to a dermatologist before starting.

Retinol, hammam and summer

Avoid retinol on the evening of a hammam, a scrub or hair removal: the skin is already sensitized. In the height of summer and with sun exposure, many reduce to once or twice a week or pause retinol.

Comparison: retinol across brands

  • The Ordinary: retinol 0.2 / 0.5 / 1% in squalane, retinal 0.2%.
  • Paula’s Choice: 0.3% retinol combined with bakuchiol, Clinical range.
  • CeraVe: resurfacing retinol serum with ceramides.
  • La Roche-Posay: Retinol B3, anti-wrinkle serum for sensitive skin.
  • Medik8: Crystal Retinal, progressive strengths.
  • Cosmogenesis Labs: retinol 0.3%, squalane 10%, jojoba, grape seed, 30 ml.

Storage

Retinol is sensitive to light and air. Opaque bottle, tightly closed, away from heat.

What do dermatologists say about retinol?

The American Academy of Dermatology recalls three rules: introduce the retinoid gradually, apply it in the evening on dry skin, and protect the skin from the sun every day. A review published in Clinical Interventions in Aging (Mukherjee et al., 2006) describes retinoids as the most studied family of actives against visible skin aging, with irritation at the start of use being common but generally temporary.

Retinol as a serum, cream or oil?

  • Serum: the most common format, easy to dose drop by drop. Our retinol serum combines retinol with squalane for more comfort.
  • Cream: often gentler, with a lower concentration. Practical for dry skin.
  • Oil or squalane base: suits dry and mature skin, less so very oily skin.

The format matters less than regular use and the starting concentration. To see other skincare formats, browse our selection of face serums.

Retinol on oily, combination or dry skin

  • Oily or blemish-prone skin: retinol helps smooth the skin texture. Keep a light cream and do not combine it with an AHA/BHA exfoliant on the same evening (see our oily skin routine).
  • Combination skin: apply to the forehead and cheeks first, avoiding the sides of the nose and the corners of the mouth, which are more delicate.
  • Dry skin: the sandwich method and a rich cream limit tightness. The repairing anti-aging night cream seals in the retinol.
  • Olive skin: go slowly. Irritation can leave brown marks, which take longer to fade than redness.

Purging or reaction: how to tell the difference?

During the first weeks, some skins see small spots appear in the areas where they usually break out: this is “purging”, linked to faster skin renewal. It generally fades within four to six weeks. Widespread redness, burning, swelling or spots in unusual areas point instead to irritation or a reaction: stop and seek advice.

Areas to avoid and small habits

  • Avoid the eye area, the sides of the nose and the corners of the lips.
  • Wait until the skin is completely dry after cleansing: on damp skin, retinol penetrates faster and irritates more.
  • A neutral balm on the lips and around the nostrils protects delicate areas.
  • Do not mix retinol in your hand with another active.

Sample two-week routine

Morning: gentle cleanser, vitamin C serum or hydrating serum, cream, SPF 50.
Evening 1: cleanse, retinol, night cream.
Evenings 2 and 3: cleanse, hyaluronic acid serum, night cream.
Then start again. If the skin stays comfortable after two weeks, move to every other evening.
